A Blast From The Past

It's pretty much quarantine time now worldwide. This COVID-19 stuff is running its course and people are losing their minds. Stores are being emptied out of toilet paper and basic goods. Things did escalate a lot this week, I was even doing work remotely on Friday. But this panic people are going into is just ridiculous. I mean, are most people really that weak that if the mundane little routines in their miserably boring lives are interrupted in the slightest they are driven into complete panic? I concede that I'm a really solitary guy that spends most of my time in front of a monitor, so my daily routines are pretty much uneffected. Who knows, maybe if my routine got completely rattled I'd be out their too buying up cans of beans.

Given that I now have the perfect excuse to completely crawl into my no-lifer cocoon, I decided to pick up a game I bought a while ago and give it another try. It's called TIS-100 and it's an Assembly puzzle game. After getting through Human Resource Machine I was really itching for a similar game but not quite straight up writing Assembly code yet. After reading the 14-page PDF manual just to get the first level completed, I was in love. There is something so fundamentally enjoyable about getting Assembly-esque code running the way you want it. For a long time I spent my life trying out all kinds of things, but now I'm starting to find my purpose. I'm finally becoming the mildly overweight IT-guy I was always meant to be.

Otherwise, yesterday I saw an old friend who has taken a radical turn to the right. It was frankly embarrasing being out in the city with her as she would quite loudly and without any qualms state that "Suomessa puhutaan suomea" and all this xenophobic shit I detest. Of course, any kind of tolerance I try to advocate for is seen as weakness and as me being brainwashed. It really breaks my heart seeing the turn she has made. I wonder if she'll ever recover, but I doubt it. I felt that I got her to question some of her more extreme views, and maybe the conversation we had might take root, but I'm pretty sure she's going right back to the boards she's been getting her information from.

Well that's life right now. Going to try to stay in as much as possible and take this oppurtunity to learn some more stuff and stay indoors. If I can spend this week doing remote work days, it would be great. The trade fair I was suppossed to go to next week got cancelled due to the pandemic so I can spend next week doing something nicer that just standing around, although the break in routine is one of the only things I enjoyed about going to the trade show. Well, I'm going to go about trying to do some server upgrades now, so that's it for now.
